The Mzansi Rugby League has launched MzansiGuard, a pioneering player-welfare and safety programme designed specifically for African rugby. The initiative sets new standards for training, medical support, officiating, and concussion management — ensuring every coach, referee, medic, and player in the league is certified and accountable. With expert input aligned to global best practices, MzansiGuard aims to create a culture of protection and professionalism while opening career pathways for coaches, referees, and medical staff across South Africa.
[Johannesburg, South Africa — 6 November 2025] — The Mzansi Rugby League (MRL) South Africa’s new domestic rugby league has announced the launch of MzansiGuard, a first-of-its-kind player welfare and safety framework built for African rugby. Addressing the issue of protection in South African rugby, the MRL says that too often, safety has been left to chance.
“Through MzansiGuard every coach, referee, medic, and player in our league will be certified, educated, and accountable,” said Rasta Sharavenge, Head of Player Welfare and Safety at MRL. “It means safer training sessions, smarter contact techniques, proper concussion management, and respect for the body that carries the dream.”
Under MzansiGuard, the MRL is setting new standards for the game.: Players will be protected under the most advanced player-safety system in Africa. Coaches and referees will be accredited and tested through MzansiGuard’s own certification framework, built on global best practices and verified by experts who have worked with World Rugby.
Physios, medics, and sideline care teams will receive world-class safety training aligned with international professional unions. “MzansiGuard isn’t just compliance — for us, it’s culture,” Sharavenge added. In addition to safeguarding players, the initiative opens doors for professionals across South Africa.
“If you’re an experienced but unemployed coach, referee, or medic, this is your invitation,” said Sharavenge. More info at http://mzansiguard.com/. Check out the MRL at www.mzansirugbyleague.com. Ends.
